An Ode to Zafar Zaidi

اک شجر ایسا محبت کا لگایا جائے
Ek shajar aisa mohabbat ka lagaya jaaye

Jis ka hamsaaye ke aangan mein bhi saaya jaaye

یہ بھی ممکن ہے بتا دے وہ کوئی کام کی بات
Yeh bhi mumkin hai bata de woh koi kaam ki baat

اک نجومی کو چلو ہاتھ دکھایا جائے
Ek najoomi ko chalo haath dikhaya jaaye

دیکھنا یہ ہے کہ کون آتا ہے سایہ بن کر
Dekhna yeh hai ke kaun aata hai saaya ban kar

دھوپ میں بیٹھ کے لوگوں کو بلایا جائے
Dhoop mein baith ke logon ko bulaya jaaye

یا مری زیست کے آثار نمایاں کر دے
Ya meri zeest ke aasar numayan kar de

یا بتا دے کہ تجھے کیسے بھلایا جائے
Ya bata de ke tujhe kaise bhulaya jaaye

اس کے احسان سے انکار نہیں ہے لیکن
Us ke ehsaan se inkaar nahin hai lekin

نقش پانی پہ ظفرؔ کیسے بنایا جائے
Naqsh paani pe Zafar kaise banaya jaaye

Translation:

Let a tree of love be planted.
Whose shade reaches even into the neighbor's courtyard.
Perhaps he may reveal something truly worthwhile.
Come, let us show our palm to an astrologer.
Let us see who comes forward as a sheltering shade.
While sitting in the sun, let us call people near.
Either reveal the traces of my life's journey,
Or tell me how one is meant to forget you.
I do not deny his kindness and favors, but,
How can one draw an enduring mark upon water?
